12 Daily Habits to Adopt in 2023

With the new year upon us, I want you to get the year started off on the right foot. 2023 can be the year that we transform our lives and take the necessary steps toward creating our best self. If you’re looking for daily habits to break or new ones to adopt, then you’ve come to the right place. I’ve compiled a list of 12 daily habits that can improve your well-being. We can all afford to adopt better habits and break off bad ones. Here is my list of 12 daily habits for you to adopt in 2023.

1) Make Your Bed Every Morning

Making your bed every morning is important for a few reasons. First, making your bed keeps your area organized and makes it easier to climb in bed that night. Second, accomplishing the task of making your bed allows you to start off the day having already accomplished something. Lastly, making your bed can impact other areas of your life and help you adopt other good habits.

“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” – Admiral William H. McRaven

2) Daily Meditation

There are so many reasons for getting into meditation. According to healthline, meditation can reduce stress, help you control your anxiety, enhance self-awareness, and lengthen attention span among many others. I often find that 10 minutes of meditation works best either first thing in the morning or before you go to bed. Meditation is also not meant to be a ‘success’ or ‘failure’ activity, just go in with the mindset of letting your mind run free.

“The thing about meditation is: You become more and more you” – David Lynch

3) Reading Books

Incorporating more books into your life can only bring about positive things. According to lifehack, reading has a wide variety of benefits such as, improving memory, increasing knowledge, improving focus, reducing stress, and many others. If you have a busy daily schedule like myself, I recommend reading in the morning and at night. In the morning, whenever you’re most productive, read something informative that will expand your knowledge. Then at night, use fiction and fantasy novels as a way to relax and destress before falling asleep.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… The man who never reads lives only one” – George R.R. Martin

4) Pick Up a New Hobby

No matter what you do for a living, you surely have interests beyond what makes you money. 2022 is the perfect year to pick up a new hobby and step outside of your comfort zone. There are tons of hobbies that you can pick up such as blogging (like me), collecting baseball cards, joining a recreational sports team, knitting, volunteering, or joining a book club. The list of possibilities is seemingly endless and there are hobbies for people of all ages, skill levels, and budgets.

“Today is life – the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto.” – Dale Carnegie

5) Spend Time Outside

In a world full of distractions such as Netflix, YouTube, and TV, going outside is a thing of the past. However, spending time outside actually has many benefits. These benefits include, reducing stress, improving your mood, and boosting creativity. Let 2023 be the year we start spending more time outside.

“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees”  – Henry David Thoreau

6) Journal Every Morning

As an ode to my morning ritual, journaling every morning is something I would recommend you start incorporating as a daily habit. Journaling allows us to get things off our chest that may be bothering us, as well as provide clarity on our thoughts.

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.” — Anne Frank

7) Being Grateful Every Day

One of the greatest characteristics we can display is being grateful for every single day. No matter your situation, your problems, or your ‘shortcomings’, there is always something that we can be grateful for day in and day out. Practice being grateful by waking up and being thankful for everything that you have.

“When you are grateful, fear disappears, and abundance appears.” – Anthony Robbins

8) Exercise

Exercising can have profound impacts on not only our physical health, but our mental health as well. Studies show that exercise has the ability to decrease depression, as well reduce our anxiety and stress. Rest days are important, but I would recommend working out at least 4 times a week for the best physical and mental results!

“Typically, people who exercise, start eating better and becoming more productive at work. They smoke less and show more patience with colleagues and family. They use their credit cards less frequently and say they feel less stressed. Exercise is a keystone habit that triggers widespread change.” – Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business

9) Reduce Caffeine Intake

Coffee is one of the greatest inventions known to man and as an avid coffee drinker, I can’t stand the idea of cutting down on how much coffee I drink. However, there are benefits to reducing your caffeine intake. Benefits include, saving money, better sleep, and decreased anxiety. You don’t have to cut out caffeine entirely but use it sparingly.

“The second cup of coffee is never as good as the first.” – Theodore Roosevelt

10) Check Up on Friends

One thing you should start doing this year is checking up on your friends. In a world where we’re more connected than ever, we’ve disconnected from meaningful relationships with the people closest to us. Let’s check up with our friends in 2023 because you never know what someone might be going through.

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” – C.S. Lewis

11) Taking Cold Showers

I first heard about cold showers when I came across the story of Wim Hof. Wim Hof is a wild advocate of cold-water therapy in the fact that it helps us physically, mentally, and emotionally. Cold showers suck, but they’re well worth it.

“I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid not to have lived.” – Wim Hof

12) Contemplate Your Death

The contemplation of death is scary, but necessary. The idea that we are all going to die is liberating and it opens our eyes to the fact that tomorrow is not promised. Contemplation of this fact forces us to value our time that much more and live each day as if it were our last.

“Death may be the greatest of all human blessings” – Socrates
